Really?
Sorry for the very very very late posting people, I was very busy for the past 2 weeks :)
Here is a little bit of my opinions on Indian History in America
Why are Indians always the one with the most abnormal rituals in the eyes of American teachers? Most World History teachers in USA categorizes Indian rituals as the most abnormal and scary ones. In my opinion when you are a teacher, I think you should respect everything you teach. Teachers must get rid of their prejudice and bias before teaching.
For example today we learnt in World History that, child marriages in India were commnon during one time and girls of age 8 were taken as sex slaves by men in the early 20's. Come one... that is not what it is. Girls and Men who underwent the process of Child marriage were not suppossed to have a sexual relationship until the girl is mature and more over in most cases girl stayed in her own house until she was mature enough to manage a household.
Another ritual we learn in our book is Sati. Sati is the sacrifice of a widow into the funeral fire of her late husband. Ok this is scary I agree. But did anyone go behind the facts of why this is performed? Sati was performed because it is believed that a wife's duty after husband's death is to protect her chastity and purity. In the currupt world it was not possible for a women to do that, unless she had relatives and family alive. So women opted if she wanted a Sati or not...
Ofcourse i agree our cast systems and somethings were really harush and strict but all religions, not only Hinduism has a logical explanation that is acceptable for its followers and I think teachers of World History and such MUST get rid of these biases and prejudices and explain the real essence of all cultures to their students.
